Hello, My wife and I are an old retired couple. I am 75, my wife is 55. We live on a small farm in Missouri. I have accomplished most of the things I ever wanted to do, except go to a claimbake. Recently on TV I saw an old man walking along a shoreline, looking for clams. If you know someone around my age who enjoys this, maybe he would like to show this old man how it is done. Thank you

We are coming in July for the first time to vist Kill Devils Hill, NC one of our party spouse can't make the whole trip, is there a flight he can take from Baltimore, MD or Philadelphia, PA to the OB and the travel time to go pick him up is less than an hour. Or do you have another suggestion, they are trying to void bringing 2 cars down. This would be a one way trip. Help?

Hello again. Back in September I listed a motel to stay in around the Buxton/Hatteras Village area that was really nice and affordable. It was the Sea Gull Motel. That motel is no longer there. It was one of the fatalities from Isabel. Also, if the gentelman who asked about finding a NICE beach to stay at on the Outer Banks is on today, all I have to say is... ALL OF THE BEACHES ARE NICE!!!!!

My Fiancee & I would love to get married by the lighthouse in Cape Hatteraus. Is that possible... do people get married there? If so, where would someone obtain information on where to start? Please respond to me as soon as you can as we would like to be married before December. Thank you for any assistance... it is greatly appreciated! Jacqueline Holland

If anyone out there is looking for a nice, cheap, place to stay in the Buxton, Hatteras, area, I'd recommend the Sea Gull motel. It's right on the beach and the rooms are very roomy and clean. My favorite so far.!!!! Also, does anyone remember the Vacationer Motel in Nags Head? You know, the one they bull-dozed and replaced with 4 condos? Oh wait that's happening everywhere! I really miss that place!!!

Hello everyone... I am from PA and am going down to Avon for the Red Drum Tournament that Frank and Fran are holding. The latest I've ever been to the Outer Banks was during the last week of September. It was a nice temperature but rained alot. I will be coming down October 22 to the 26th and need to know what to wear. I will be fishing alomost all day and alot during the night time and wee hours of the morning. Is it usually cold and windy during this time of year? I know weather varies but on average. I noticed that alot of fisherman wear the waders. Is that recommended? I'm only a 20 year old female and I am not that experienced in catching big fish either. I just need to know what clothing to bring along down there. Long sleeve shirts and long pants? It would be really nice if it was still warm enough to wear shorts at least. That way I wouldn't have to worry about my pant legs getting wet while casting or if the waves splash me. Any suggestions? Anybody????????? Thanks~

we went to nags 6/21/02 for the week and had great weather. the home we stayed in had a book for memories and many people wrote about a bug problem, flies mosquitos, etc. did we luck out and not have any problem because we didn't have any rain or can i expect that with this year's extremely wet spring season so far that i'll need to bring a lot of bug spray for vacation week 6/21/03?

Can you give me information on the ferry that runs from the mainland in NC to the Outer Banks ? We are travelling in June from SC. We need to know how soon and where to order our ferry tickets, directions to the ferry, say from Moorehead City, and what time we need to be at the ferry landing site. Thanks Sid

I need someone in the area to give a sense of how the Outer Banks might be in September, when I wish to have a wedding ceremony of sorts on the beachfront. We're inviting about seventy people, though even a 75% attendance would be surprising. However, ideally there needs to be a central cluster of accommodations available for everyone possible. The ceremony itself is another issue. Does the idea of such a huge wedding party descending upon the beach on one of those weekends sound do-able? If you think you have a feeling for how it might play out, your comments are gratefully welcome! Thanks, Howard
-- Howard Lim - Monday, May 12, 2003 at 22:24:06

We will be coming to the outerbanks in june for two weeks and we will be staying in timeshare units. We would like to bring our dog and we are wondering if there are any places where we would be able to board our dog and take him out during the day? If so what would the cost be. Thank you

Hi I was just at your web site, getting the ferry schedule, and OI noticed that it was for 1997. Do you have a current schedule...I need one for July 1999. Thanks, Janie

Editor's Note: Ferry schedule is at http://www.dot.state.nc.us/transit/ferry/

Okay, there are certain places you have to go for certain things to eat on the Outer Banks. HURRICANE MO'S for the best steamed oysters ever (beer and wine only)! CAPT'N FRANKS for the best hot dogs! CLARA'S for the absolute best ever she-crab soup! DAIRY MART for the best hamburger you will ever put in your mouth (outside dining only!) ELIZABETH'S CAFE all around yummy! For great tuna taco's, it's gotta be GOOMBAY'S. JOHN'S DRIVE IN for tuna boats with fried okra and don't forget the peanut butter milkshakes (outside dining only!) THE OASIS: you have to go get the BELLRINGERS! Raw oyster on a saltine cracker with horseradish, hot sauce and a jalapeno; a buck a piece. Your nasal passages will be clear for weeks. My record is six. If Mark makes them; I can only do three. THAI ROOM for the sauteed soft shells. We lived on the Outer Banks for nearly 10 years but go back at least twice a year. Just got back from our 11 days during Easter 99. Had a wonde! rful time

HI TAMMY, Your best bet from Indiana might be to drive to Cincinnati, from I-74, take I-275 South through Northern Kentucky, drive across the I-275 bridge back into Ohio, then take the route 32 exit from I-275. Follow Route 32 (mostly 4 lane) East until it joins Route 35 South in Jackson, Ohio. Take Route 35 South to Galipolis, Ohio, cross the Ohio River into West Virginia, stay on Route 35 and go South until it joins Interstate 64 at Nitro, W.V. Follow Interstate 64 South to its intersection with Interstate 81 North to pick-up Interstate 64 South East into Richmond, Viriginia. Take I-64 on into Norfolk, Va. and look for signs for Route 168, Great Bridge. You might have to take another road to Route 168. Follow 168 South through Great Bridge and cross the state line into North Carolina, then follow Route 168 into a town called Barco...watch for the intersection of Route 168 and Route 158, follow 158 South and STAY on Route 158 across the bridge to Nags Head, Outer Banks!!! Driving time from Indianapolis should take about 13 1/2 to 14 hours with a couple of stops for gas and comfort. Call Twiddy Realtors, Corolla, for the best beach houses on the beach. They are a pleasure to work with. Have a great and happy trip! If you want a scenic along the river drive, follow I-74 from Indianapolis to I-75 South, get in the far left lanes and follow the downtown exits to Fort Washington Way (Route 50) and take Route 50 East to Delta Avenue, about five miles east of CIncinnati. Make a right onto Delta Ave., then a left onto Kellogg Avenue. Follow Kellogg Avenue (Route 52) through Portsmouth, Ohio and cross bridge at Chesapeake, Ohio and take route 52 to I-64 East into Huntington, W.V and follow earlier course above to Richmond, Va. This is a scenic route but their are many little towns with radar traps so you really have to watch your speed....

2/11/99 We're staying in South Nags Head the last week of July. would like best auto route from western Mass. Got some great vacation ideas from the travelogue. Noticed there are several short bike trails. Are they far apart? Also has anyone had difficulty getting security deposit back from Stan White realty?

For the latest flight information to the Outer Banks, check out the Dare County Regional Airport web site at http://www.fly2mqi.com . Many of the local business people have linked to the site so you will be able to get the latest weather and other information. Keep an eye on the "Whats New" page for up dates on our possible SCHEDULED AIR SERVICE to Manteo.

I need to get from Whalehead or vicinity to Knoxville on the 14th of August. Is there still a charter flight operating from that area to Knoxville? Bus service? One way car rental? Thanks Dennis at
-- Anonymous submitted before 12/31/1998

I grew up on the Outer Banks, and wanted to suggest that visitors take the Highway 264 route to or from the Outer Banks for a unique and pleasant ride through eastern North Carolina. Be sure and visit historic Lake Mattamuskeet, Mattamuskeet Lodge, and the Octagon House. In the winter, the area abounds with wild Canadian gesse and tundra swans. In the spring, the new crops peeping through the rich, black dirt are breathtaking; and in the autumn, the bounty of the harvest is awe inspiring! There are a couple of B&B's, a few family-owned motels, and a couple of good restaurants featuring fresh seafood. Hyde County truly is God's country, and definitely worth the detour! The Greater Hyde County Chamber of Commerce (on the Web) is always happy to send information.

Can anyone tell me what is the best way to get to the Outer Banks from Ohio. I am going to be staying in Salvo during July 98. All the internet map sights and AAA tell me to come down from the north through Norfolk VA. Would it be quicker to come in from the west on 64. Thanks for your help.

In August I will be traveling from NJ to Ocracoke. What is the best way to reach the island. Option 1 is to fly into Raleigh Durham and take a puddle jumper to the island - not crazy about taking the puddle jumper. What other options do I have? submitted 6/16/98

The easiest route to the Outer Banks for those of you not driving, is to take a flight into Norfolk International Airport and then take a commuter flight to the Outer Banks. The name of a good commuter airline is Piedmont Aviation (Outer Banks Airways), which will fly you rather inexpensively to either Manteo or Kill Devil Hills. Their # is 919 441-7677. Enjoy!!

Can anyone tell me the best way to reach the outer banks from Oklahoma City. Should we fly into Raleigh/Durham or Norfolk. One of the older comments listed RD with a N. State Air flight to Frisco, however the 800 number listed is not being answered - the number listed was 1800-831-8208. Can anyone help? Is it better to rent a car from RD or Norfolk? Thanks for any help!
-- M3nJ  submitted 4/28/1998
Editor's Note: The closest airport is probably Norfolk. It's about a 5 hour drive from RDU depending on where on the OB you go and something like 2 hours or less from Norfolk. Sorry - I'm not familiar with the local flights - perhaps someone else can contribute here?

There's a great service out of Norfolk International Airport to take travelers to the Outer Banks... BROWN AUTO EXECUTIVE SEDAN 757-622-7441. From one to 12 passengers. Door to Door round trip or one-way service available all year long 24 hours a day. reservations 24hour ahead requested.

We are inquiring about the "beaches" of the Outer Banks. We will be vacationing somewhere on the Outer Banks this summer and one of our primary concerns is the "beach". We are looking for a wide beach where we can spread out and not be bothered by other beach-goers (and vice-versa as we have three active youngsters!). We also want a beach with a gradual slope into the ocean (our children are under 10) and weak undercurrent. We would appreciate your comments and/or recommendations. Thanks! Mark Lynam Mount Joy, PA

We'll be traveling to the outer banks for a week long family reunion on July 5, 1998 and wanted to know the best and most cost effective way to get there from Massachusetts (western mass, the spfld area). Car rental, fly or i had even considered taking a train into dc and renting a car from there. where would closest train station be or the closest airport????????????? driving is always an option but i don't know if i really want to do that.........drove to fla once and swore i'd never do that again, i was climbing the car walls just into jersey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and this time it'll be with an eleven year old..............any help would be appreciated.........thanx

I might be helpful to have a current ferry schedule. kim west
-- () submitted 11/25/1997
Editor's Note: The North Carolina Department of Transportation maintains a ferry schedule at: http://www.dot.state.nc.us/transit/ferry/. I'll see about making sure that we don't have any old ferry info online here.

Our trip was 7/26-8/2/97. TRAVEL-From Pittsburgh, took 9 hours to get there, 12-1/2 to get back. We left OB at 10:00 AM Sat. Our friends who stopped for breakfast in OB on the way back left 1-1/2 hours later, got home only 1/2 hour later than we did. Two lane roads in NC (under construction to make 4) were part of it but mostly rubber-neckers watching tire being fixed accounted for the delay. Women, make sure you have extra tissues in your pocket--rest rooms all out of bathroom tissues.
-- Nancy Pulsifer  submitted 8/4/1997

If Gordon Campbell can stand the I95 traffic headed south on Saturday, "8"/2/97 (9/2 is a Tuesday) I'm sure he can stand Route 50 over to Route 13. Route 13 will take him over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel which I think is a fun way to go. We've seen a battleship passing by and many tankers and freighters. Seventeen miles across the mouth of the bay only 20 feet or so off the surface of the water. On 6/28 a tanker passed over our heads as we were in the tunnel (glad he stayed in the channel!). We took the ferry from Cape May, NJ to Lewes, DE. It took us about 6 hours from the time we left the ferry terminal in Lewes to KDH with a 20 minute stop at Stuckey's in Mappsville, VA. Traffic wasn't too bad until we got to the bridge crossing Currituck Sound.
-- Mike Torpey submitted 7/8/1997

What is the quickest way to get from Charleston, SC to Kitty Hawk, NC?
-- cecil  submitted 6/9/1997
Editor's Note: Fortunately or unfortunately (depending on your view) it's not a direct path between my 2 most favorite spots. If you're looking for speed, I recommend taking the Interstates. 17N from Charleston is pretty good and scenic, I'd take that to Wilmington, NC and then work over to I40 (otherwise you're having to take I26 West to I95 North to I64 East). On I40 start working your way up to I64 east which will take you through Manteo and to the Outer Banks. I just tried a run on shortest route on MapsOnUs (www.mapsonus.com) and they recommend I17 north out of Charleston all the way until you hit I64 in NC. This is 400 miles versus 452 for the I26 to I95 to I64 route. I've done both the I17 route and the Interstate route - both are long just one is much prettier than the other. Have a good trip!

I need to travel from the Outer Banks (Avon) to get to Charlotte NC airport, by 5:00 PM on 6-9-97.
1) Is there a taxi/airport van service to a nearby airport (like Norfolk)?
2) Is there a car rental convenient to Avon, for drop-off at a nearby airport?
3) Any other suggestions?
-- Chuck Warren  submitted 5/30/1997

We'll be travelling to the Outer Banks (Duck) this summer. We will be flying from Los Angeles. Is Norfolk, VA the best alternative. I heard a suggestion on a flight from Raleigh/Durham, but is that realistic? I don't want to depend on a puddle-jumper! Thanks for your help!
-- Matthew Hall submitted 3/3/97
Editor's Note: While you'll have many more options flying into Raleigh/Durham, it's a 5 hour drive to the Outer Banks. I understand that many people do foly into Norfolk and then drive the rest of the way. Anyone else with thoughts on this?

My family will be heading down to the Outer Banks the weekend of October 12th from Wisconsin. We will be stopping in Ohio to pick up my parents. We would appreciate any suggestions on the best route to the OB from Columbus, Ohio. Thanks much! 10/2/96

I am planning to visit the outer banks on 8/10/96. We are travelling by motorhome and will not be towing. Where and what is closest auto rental location? We are coming down from the north(rte.13) to rodanthe.
--  submitted 8/5/1996
Editor's Note: Well, I must apologize. I thought I'd posted this last week - guess there's always one more bug in that software :-(. Anyway, there are 3 auto rental places that I've found some information on:
Outer Banks Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge, Jeep, Eagle: 919-441-1146, at the 5 1/2 MP on the Bypass, Kill Devil Hills.
R.D. Sawyer Motor Company Ford and Mercury: 919-473-2141, in Manteo.
U-Save Auto Rental/Midgette Auto Sales: 800-685-9938, on Hwy 158 in Point Harbor.

I'm heading to the outer banks (Ocean Hill, n. of Duck) tomorrow am (Aug 3). I'm starting from DC and wondered whether there is a way to bypass Norfolk, VA Beach via some thing entitled 664? Please help!
-- jim thomason  submitted 8/2/96
Editor's Note: A question I can answer! The 664 beltway allow you to miss most of Norfolk and Virginia Beach and the old tunnel. I assume since you coming from DC, that you will be doing the 95/295/64 route and be approaching Norfolk on 64 East. When you get close to Hampton Roads and see the Hampton Roads Coliseum, begin looking for the 664 signs. 664 is a fairly new highway and passes around Portsmouth and Chesapeake. Take 664 to 64 at the Portsmouth/Chesapeake line. You can pick up 168 from 64 in Chesapeake and continue on the trip to the Outer Banks.

I'm trying to find out what the best way is to get to Manteo from Boston. Should I fly to Norfolk and then reant a car and drive the rest of the way? Please advise. Thanks.

Heading to the Outer Banks(Whalehead beach) week of 8/4/96 from Phoenix AZ-what's the best commercial airport to fly into?(Is it Norfolk?) and how long is the drive from the airport?
-- timothy E. Mathews submitted 6/11/96
Editor's Note: Norfolk is a reasonable airport and is about 1.5 to 2 hours away. You might also consider the next recommendation in the travelogue regarding flying into Raleigh/Durham.

One of the easiest and quickest ways to visit the outer banks is to fly from Raleigh-Durham International Airport on North State Air Service's scheduled roundtrip weekend flight. Leave RDU around 12 noon (they are very flexible as to departure times and try to accomadate the passengers schedule) The flight arrives in Frisco (on Hatteras Island) and Ocracoke a little aover an hour later. Not only do you arrive refreshed and rested but you get a wonderful view of eastern NC,the Pamlico Sound and the Outer Banks from the plane. The return trip is on Sunday. Sometimes you can see dolphin and red drum in the water on the approach to land. It is neat! You can reach them at 800 831 8208.
