Golf Hilton Head, SC
Harbour Town Golf Links
Sea Pines Plantation
A lasting monument to southern coastal golf, Harbour Town is unquestionably
one of the great lowland courses in the world, with
6,900 yards of tight, twisting fairways flanked by grand oaks
and towering pines. Built by Pete Dye with assistance from Jack Nicklaus, the course is set low to the ground and allows many
opportunities for pitch-and-run shots onto the small, postage-stamp-sized
greens. Although every hole at Harbour Town has its own
unique character, the back nine presents one formidable challenge
after another. From the tight, testy 378-yard 13th - one of the
country's best short par fours, playing to a narrow green raised
out of a horseshoe-shaped bunker by cypress planks - to the demanding
478-yard 18th that winds along the marshes of Calibogue Sound,
this is championship golf at its finest. The course opened in
1969, just in time to host the PGA's Sea Pines Heritage Classic,
and gained immediate international attention when Arnold Palmer
won the inaugural tournament. The red and white striped lighthouse
at Harbour Town has since become a worldwide symbol for both Sea
Pines and Hilton Head Island.
